![]() ![]() Buying sweaters and pants that run in the hundred-dollar range should be grounds for an intervention. I’ve worn the same T-shirts almost every day since my freshman college year, I prefer to do my shopping at outlet stores, and I think that any price above $20 for a pair of blue jeans is a God damn felony. Two, I realized just how much of a penny-pinching bastard I am. I’d rank it right up there with the Japanese No More Heroes manual as the best current-generation examples of packaged material done right. One, the manual reads like a fashion magazine with cover lines, eye-catching and off-center text blocks, and clothing recommendations sprinkled throughout. I noticed two things before even popping in the game card. You probably think I’m fucking bonkers, but dammit! I feel compelled to convince you that a game can be good and not tailored to your specific interests by using the most radical example I can find! Think of it as a personal challenge. Well, I went down to Target and plunked down my own cash for a copy with the aim of understanding its appeal. Style Savvy has been out for three weeks and there are still only two reviews on Metacritic. Nonetheless, I’m surprised at how little attention this game is being paid anywhere. No self-conscious male gamer would ever come within spitting distance of it. It would be unfair to lump it in the same group as Ubisoft’s Imagine line without intense scrutiny.īut even if this game is successful in the West, it is directly marketed at teen and preteen females who love shopping, styling, and accessorizing. Software like Brain Age and Wii Sports demonstrate that Nintendo has knack for marrying accessibility and high quality unlike its me-too competitors. Numbers aside, it’s a Nintendo-published title and thus should be considered as part of the company’s expanded-audience campaign. This game came out of nowhere and struck a big chord with audiences. It continued to chart well into 2009 and was last seen hovering above 800k units sold. No, not because I’m a ten-year-old girl but because Style Savvy is the localized title of Wagamama Fashion: Girls Mode, the 19th best-selling game as well as the best-selling new IP of 2008 in Japan. While the hardcore thumped their chests, I was genuinely interested. Thanks for making our decision to not invite you to our next birthday even easier, Nintendo. More pretty princess dress-me-up nonsense. There’s even been rumor that they’re going out of business…which is another scary thing about using “industry” software. When Style Savvy was announced during Nintendo’s E3 2009 presser, the Internet let out an emphatic groan. This screenshot of Colour Matters from late 2018? A photo is worth a thousand words: They don’t get updated often, they’re buggy, and most are just OUTDATED. ![]() ( I know because I’ve used some of them.) But smaller brands and true remote freelancers don’t!Īnd after all that $$$? The interfaces are clunky, some only work on Windows, and support is mediocre at best. Some BIG brands might have that kind of money for software. Then? Yearly subscriptions are $$$ ($2-4k PER user). Like tens thousands of dollars JUST to get set up ($10-25k). Since so many people use it, it’s cost effective (just over $600/year for the entire Suite as of February 2022) and always maintained.Ĭontrast that against fashion software (NedGraphics, Kaledo and Colour Matters are the 3 big ones)? It’s a GIANT company with engineers up the WAZOO and offices around the world. It’s used in LOADS of industries from fashion to graphics and architecture to web. But NONE of this fashion design software competes with Adobe Illustrator.Īdobe is one of the most WIDELY used design programs in the world. There are also a handful of “general” design programs out there: Corel Draw, Freehand and InkScape are a few. Well, there are a handful of “fancy” fashion design programs out there: Colour Matters, Ned Graphics and Kaledo are a few. So, what software do fashion designers use? This is especially important when you want to work remotely as a freelancer. (I know some designers who still start the design process this way.)īut in reality? Digital (read: computer) drawing skills are MANDATORY. Hand sketching skills can be useful to quickly get ROUGH ideas on paper. But hand sketching in the fashion industry is OUTDATED. ![]() Why? Because hand sketching is glamorous. ![]() If you watch YouTube videos or go to fashion school, you may think that fashion designers frolic in fabric all day and sketch beautiful designs on paper.
